Assumptions
- The worked example is £40,000, paid monthly, in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, with no pension and no student loan, for 2026 to 2027.
- National Insurance uses the monthly thresholds and is multiplied by 12. Student loan repayments are rounded down to the nearest pound in each pay period.
- This is an estimate of a full year of equal pay. It is not a tax code and it does not include benefits in kind, marriage allowance or Scottish rates unless you select Scotland.
- Salary sacrifice reduces contractual pay before income tax, National Insurance and student loan repayments.
- Net pay pension contributions reduce taxable pay, but not National Insurance or student loan repayments.
- Relief at source is paid from net pay. Basic-rate relief is added in the pension. Extra relief reduces tax and is not added twice.
- Student loan repayments use the pay-period threshold and are rounded down to the nearest pound, then multiplied by the number of periods.
- National Insurance uses the monthly or weekly thresholds for the selected pay frequency.
Questions
Does salary sacrifice reduce student loan repayments?
Yes in this model. Sacrifice reduces the pay used for National Insurance, and student loan repayments use that same pay. A net pay or relief-at-source contribution does not.
Why is net pay not just gross minus 20%?
The Personal Allowance is untaxed, National Insurance uses different thresholds, and pension method changes the order of the calculation.
